Prison Officials Ignore Deteriorating Health of Majid Tavakoli

According to reports by HRANA, even though Majid Tavakoli’s physical condition has seriously deteriorated, prison officials have taken no actions to treat him. Tavakoli is a well-known student activist who was arrested on December 7, 2009. On June 22nd, he was transferred to room 2 in ward 350 of Evin prison. Since his transfer he has only been allowed a two minute phone conversation with his family.

HRANA reports that due to the harsh prison conditions and, in particular, Tavakoli’s dry hunger strike while he was in solitary confinement in ward 240, he is now suffering from a serious lung condition that is rapidly deteriorating with the passing of each day.

The medicines prescribed to Tavakoli by a doctor are no longer sufficient. Dr. Behzadian Nejad, Tavakoli’s prison mate, has recommended that he stop taking the pills to avoid adverse consequences.

As a result of the recent construction in ward 350, many political prisoners have been transferred from other areas in ward 350 (particularly section 7 and 8) to areas that are more restricted than the general wards.

Majid Tavakoli, a former student at Amirkabir University in Tehran, was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison.
